The core values of the National Cheng Kung University Hospital are life, love, excellence and creativity. We devote ourselves to internalize these core values and provide the best medical environment for the people in southern Taiwan. We aim to become the best medical care center for the general public, and the best teaching, research, and work environment for medical professionals.
“Human Biobank of National Cheng Kung University Hospital” was established on January 1, 2002. At the beginning, this facility was called ” The National Research Program for Genomic Medicine (NRPGM)- Tumor Tissue Banking Core Facility in Southern Taiwan” established with the project grant from the National Science Association. After the project ended on May 1, 1998, this facility was renamed as “The Tissue Bank of National Cheng Kung University Hospital“ and continued to operate with the support of the hospital. We further received a grant from the Department of Health on August 1, 1999, which allowed us to integrate this network. Therefore, this facility became "The Tissue Bank and Bioinformatics Core Lab", which was affiliated with the Clinical Medical Research Center of our hospital. On August 19, 2002, with the permission of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the facility was officially renamed as "The Human Biobank of National Cheng Kung University Hospital.
The main objective of this biobank is to assist medical researchers to conduct cancer research. All of the specimens are collected from cancer patients in our hospital. The operation of the database includes the collection of tissue and blood specimens, the integration of relevant clinical information, and the provision of a number of services related to tissue research. Researchers can request specimens and related information only under the dual control of the Human Trials Committee (IRB) and the Human Biological Database Ethics Committee (EGC). At present, specimens from 13 different cancers are collected in this database. The distribution of tumor types is shown in the following figure:
Our goal is to provide a channel that can protect the privacy of patients and legally assist medical researchers to obtain research specimens, so as to make substantial contributions to the field of cancer research.
