The biobank of Taichung Veterans General Hospital was established based on the “Human Biobank Management Act” of Ministry of Health and Welfare of Taiwan. The main purpose of the biobank is not only to provide a steady and reliable source of clinical samples for medical research, but also to build a system with complete clinical data. Besides, our team also aims to improve the health and well-being of human with our research outcome.
Taichung Veterans General Hospital is the only public medical center in the central of Taiwan, and we undertake responsibility in “Medical Services”, “Clinical Education and Training”, as well as “academic research and developments”. Due to the ongoing improvement in medicine, the structure of Taiwan population is aging, and tends to have a long-life expectancy. Therefore, the chronic diseases have replaced the transmission diseases, and become an important issue in public health. Furthermore, chronic diseases such as, malignant tumors, cerebrovascular diseases, heart diseases, diabetes, chronic hepatitis, chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and hypertension, are ranking in the ten leading causes of death in Taiwan population. Nowaday, as a post genome era, human specimens are already an important marital in biological research, and they will definitely play a critical role in the future biomedical research to help researcher to address the disease mechanism. In short, our team hopes to generate a biobank, which in compliance with the government regulation, with accomplish software and hardware facilities and management mechanisms.
